The Activist’s Toolkit Released!
I wrote this book at the urging of friends. At first I said, “Me, write a book? The world doesn’t need another book on climate change or transportation reform. Plus, I’m an activist, not a researcher.”
Write what you know, they admonished me, and what I know is how to get things done. So, The Activist’s Toolkit is about getting things done: what does it take to jump into action.
I cover three general themes:
1. the personal work you should do to be clear about what motivates and energizes you. What values do you hold dear? What talents do you bring? What issues do you care about?
2. working with others, including breaking down your prejudices and fears that prevent you from asking for help, and giving help.
3. creating a sustainable, successful organization/career/contribution; covering topics from time management to fundraising.
You will find practical exercises (I call them Try It Now) to go from the abstract to the practical. I also include stories from my life and others to illustrate the ideas presented (Tales from the Trenches). The Activist’s Toolkit is designed to be accessible, useful, inspiring and fun. Try it out!
