Why Get Kids Outside to Learn? Here’s the Answer
Oregon has a long history of turning kids on to to their world through taking them for a week of hands-on science education, in the woods, while they are in 5th or 6th grade. Yeah, sure, they learn about soil and water, trees and animals but… they also learn a heck of lot about themselves. High school students volunteer to teach and mentor the younger students–and learn a lot themselves. Here a young man talks about his experience with a class from Kraxberger Middle School in the small town of Gladstone that included Special Education students.
